    • CPU Cache

Cache is a form memory that is directly connected to the CPU. It can be accessed much more quickly than the computer's main memory (DRAM). Having a larger cache will result in fewer reads from the main memory, increasing overall system speed and stability.

      CPU Speed (Hertz)

GHz, or gigahertz, is a measure of the clockspeed of the CPU chip. In general, higher means faster, particularly for single-threaded applications which aren't able to process in parallel.

      CPU Cores

The number of cores in a computer determines how many functions the processor can run in parallel. For highly threaded applications, such as compilers and 3D rendering, you can see a dramatic decrease in overall processing time.

      Cores vs. Speed

If your server is built to do one thing quickly, such as serve pages in a web application, you'll generally want to look for the highest possible clockspeeds, or GHz. In these cases, the applications can usually only process one request at a time and multiple cores may sit dormant.

On the other hand, if your server is built to run multiple applications or to run highly threaded or parallel compiling or rendering, going for the option with the most running cores may perform better than a faster but smaller processor.

    • Heat sinks are sold separately for most units. It is almost impossible to fit a CPU and heat sink perfectly together, so we use a thermal grease. A thermal grease is designed to fill any air gaps, promising the best possible connection between the two.

    • Power redundancy is not necessary though it is highly recommended for critical servers. It can keep your servers and data centers running in the event of an outage or other event. Typically, each PSU has a feed from a different utility company. Redundant power supplies ensure you don't have any downtime in the event that your power supply fails.

    • HDD speed is dictated by RPM and data density. For a faster hard disk speed, go for one with the highest data density. Common consumer HDD speeds include 5,400, 7,200, and 10,000 RPM. Some servers can even go up to 15,000 RPM. Most desktops have 7,200 RPM.

Revolutions Per Minute Average Data Transfer Rates Random Read/Write Speeds
      5,400 RPM HDD 75 MB/s 65 IOPS
      7,200 RPM HDD 100 MB/s 90 IOPS
      10,000 RPM HDD 140 MB/s 140 IOPS

    • Watch this video to learn how to enter the RAID configuration utility and set a basic single RAID array on a Dell server using a PERC 6/I controller.

**Important notes: Once you’ve set up your RAID, do not move drives around unless they are hot swappable, or your RAID will be lost.

**RAID should not be a means for backing up data! If you rely on one server to store your data, you run the risk of losing everything.

    • If you see an orange flashing light, this means your DIMM has failed. Dispose of the defective DIMM properly. E-mail our support department, and we will send out a replacement.

    • An LED or beep code means a basic function was unable to start. Below are common error codes:

      LED and Beep Code Description
LED blinks 4 times with 4 beeps Power Supply
LED blinks 5 times with 5 beeps Memory
LED blinks 6 times with 6 beeps Video Card or Graphics
LED blinks 7 times with 7 beeps Motherboard or System Board Failure
LED blinks 8 times with 8 beeps BIOS or CMOS Problem (ROM)
